Peter Okoye; the other half of the singing duo P Square yesterday
curled up his left bicep and took pictures of a new tattoo he made
clasped around his left wrist, cascading down his forearm, he quickly
posted this on social networking site Twitter but rather than accolades,
more outrage have poured from fans.
The dark tattoo glistening around his arm looked somewhat like a
calligraphy of modern abstract art with a studded star and US dollar
sign appearing distinctively in the wave-like dark formations. Peter
appeared quite pleased with the result but not all of his Twitter
followers and fans.
A cross section of internet active users later interviewed by this
writer feared this was becoming a gradual obsession. “Soon he will have
his entire body covered in tattoo,” one remarked.
Another anonymous said “This is the problem with Nigerian artists who
feel that they have to copy what foreign rappers are doing. He does not
need this to be successful at all and I really hope its temporary.
Unlike rappers in USA who have no other ambition, our own artists may
one day contest for political office and what will he have to say then”
Peter Okoye obviously may not have this ambition even in his wildest
imagination but he is Peter of the famous P Square so talk like this is
expected.
The twin wanted to feel fan’s reactions and he is getting it with
hundreds pouring in on every available social networking site and
entertainment blog. A vast majority have continued to express their
disdain at the new tattoo.
One Zeena however said “I have no idea why people still don’t
appreciate body art; he got those tattoos because he wanted to, nobody
forced him, so let’s all take a chill pill and relax”
Peter is not the only Nigerian artist wearing tattoos; Wizkid,
Davido, Flavour and Tiwa Savage also spot their own tattoos, Peter’s
case, however, has always been different with each new tattoo sparking
off wide reactions.
In August 2009, he had unleashed on himself the first set of tattoos
with a guitar and music clef prominent in the designs; this was shortly
before P Square held the world press conference that launched their
2009 “Danger” album. Peter had flaunted his new tattoos in front of
cameras.
Industry watchers predict the twins may be up to something and this
tattoo is a new feature Peter wants to add to accentuate his appearance
at the occasion. It could be a tour or who knows … another album.
