Oba Akinjobi, G.R.A Ikeja-based Archbishop Vining Memorial
Cathedral, witnessed a rare crowd last Sunday, July 1 when the Igbokwe
family alongside friends, associates and well wishers worshiped at a
solemn memorial in honour of the late Mrs Christy Essien-Igbokwe who
died June last year.
For the family led by the husband, Chief Edwin Igbokwe, the occasion was another sober moment that was devoid of any celebrations.
And at the well-attended event,the family was called to the altar
and given special blessings and admonitions by the Dean of the
Cathedral, Venerable James Odedeji who also thanked the family for
coming adding that, “I know you came with a heavy heart. May God give
you strength beyond your imagination and stand by you always. Despite
the loss, you came to thank God. We pray that He would give you the
inner strength to cope…”
The service was graced by the likes of ex-MD of Champions Newspapers, Emma Agu, Dr Austin Izagbo, MD, Bisi Olatilo Show, Prince Bisi Olatilo, former editor of Sunday Punch, Mr Godwin Nzeakah, Apostle Harford Alile, PMAN members, the media and a host of others.
In an emotionally laden voice, Chief Igbokwe who did not hide his joy over the presence of all and sundry, confessed that her late wife meant and still means a lot to him.
“Yes, she meant a lot to us and that is why we still mourn and miss her greatly. She was my friend, sister, guardian and spiritual protector. Despite her involvement and popularity in show business, she took quality time to pray for the family”.
After the service, some of the guests accompanied the family to their Omole Phase One residence where they were treated to a low key entertainment.
‘“Today is not a day of celebration” Chief Igbokwe tod his guests adding, “We live with the full realization of Christy’s physical separation from us and the vacuum she created. So we’re out to reunite with her in faith and spirit rather than celebrate”
A successful singer, actress, and business woman, Chief (Dr) Mrs Christy Essien-Igbokwe who died on June 30, 2011, is remembered not only for her exploits in the arena but more for her philanthropic gestures to mankind.
Up till the time of going to press, goodwill and consolatory messages were still pouring into the Igbokwe home.
In one of the messages sent by Mrs Maryam Abacha, wife the late Head of State, General Sanni Abacha, she extolled the virtues of the fallen woman and prayed for the repose of her soul and continuous stability of the family.
