Wizkid & Sarkodie Share The BET “Best International Act (Africa)” Award: WHY ALWAYS AFRICA?

Last night at the BET Awards 2012 in Los Angeles, California, Wizkid and Sarkodie were both given the “Best International Act: Africa” Award jointly. This comes a year after D’Banj and 2face shared the same award. My first reaction to this news was quite bitter (if you follow me on twitter, you must have seen my rants or you can check Uduak’s blog), but I’ve slept over it and I’m in a better position to be more rational about it.

Without being too critical of BET – afterall, they’re the ones who decided to recognise our artists – I still feel some elements are missing. I could understand that African music is not BIG enough in America to have our artists collect their awards on stage or even perform alongside their American counterparts. However, I’m quite disturbed that the ONLY category with a tie, for the 2ND year running, is the African category. Could it be a move to appeal to a wider audience/fanbase? Or is it a “genuine tie” as BET’s Lilian Blankson claims?
I won’t bore you guys with a very long article (I’ve got loads of beautiful Nigerian music to review). Permit me to bite off Balotelli’s famous line and say this… WHY ALWAYS AFRICA?
*O.O*
